Commissioned by Penn State Alumnae Dr. Joel Myer, founder of AccuWeather
weather forecasting system, the completed weathervane is the largest full-bodied
weathervane in the world. Sculpted to depict the University’s mascot,
the fabled Nittany Lion, the 2,300 lb. work measures over 10 ft. in length,
3 ft. in width and 9 ft. in height. Remarkably, the weathervane requires
just over 4 knots of wind to identify wind direction from its perch atop
the newly renovated 106,500 seat Beaver Stadium in State College, PA.
The weathervane is enjoyed nationwide whenever Penn State University football
games are televised.
